Restaurant Insurance: Safety at Work

There’s a lot to keep on top of when you run a restaurant, and it’s easy to get lost in the urgent day to day needs of keeping patrons happy, checking on your servers and orders and keeping the books in order. From marketing and social media, to taxation and California restaurant insurance there are some areas that just can’t be ignored. And of the most important is safety in the workplace.

Regardless of the type of business you run, your workplace environment needs to be safe and secure for your employees, clients and members of the public. Your first step is to identify risks and prepare a set of safety guidelines or operating procedures that incorporate safety issues. Research both general safety issues, and those areas specific to your field. Once you have guidelines in place distribute them to staff and ensure they are followed at all times.

The document might include very basic guidelines such as to ensure that fire exits are kept clear, that certain loads should only be carried by two people, or that machinery can only be operated by trained employees. And include seemingly obvious matters, such as how to lift heavy items correctly (bend the knees, keep the back straight) and that those working at computers all day should stop briefly at regular intervals to stretch.

And don’t forget that regardless of how safe you make your workplace, accidents can still happen, so business insurance policies such as workers’ compensation and liability can be as essential as property cover, or in the case of workers’ compensation, mandatory.

A successful business may be your primary goal, but safety should always a top priority.
